FuelTech launches next-generation Gas Valve Train Mk V for LNG propulsion

Hedensted, Denmark

Developed for Everllence’s ME-GI 10.7 engine platform, the new Gas Valve Train Mk V builds on more than a decade of commercial GVT experience, introducing higher pressure capability alongside improvements in reliability and serviceability.

FuelTech today announces the launch of GVT Mk V, the latest generation of its Gas Valve Train technology for LNG propulsion.

The launch comes as shipowners balance requirements for operational efficiency with a changing outlook for marine fuels. Fuel availability, economics, regulation and decarbonization requirements continue to evolve, making both current performance and longer-term flexibility important considerations when investing in new vessels.

In response to these developments, GVT Mk V brings FuelTech’s existing GVT experience into a new product generation. With more than 900 GVT units delivered and over 800 vessels equipped worldwide, the new design builds on more than a decade of commercial and operational experience with LNG fuel systems.

Higher pressure capability for a new generation

One of the key developments in GVT Mk V is its higher pressure capability. Developed for Everllence’s ME-GI 10.7 platform, which increases gas injection pressure to 380 bar, the new GVT is designed to accommodate the pressure levels associated with this generation of LNG engines and support developments in engine efficiency.

Alongside the higher pressure capability, the internal flow paths have been optimized to minimize pressure losses and support efficient system performance. Furthermore, an enhanced valve design is developed to improve durability and extend operating life.

The redesign also reflects operational experience from previous GVT generations, with improved serviceability as a key focus. Access is now provided from four service sides instead of three, making critical components easier to reach. Electronics have been consolidated and repositioned, while key components are grouped for easier access during inspection and maintenance. Together, these changes simplify service activities and support reliability and uptime over the lifetime of the system.

“We have taken the experience from more than 900 delivered GVT units and used it as the basis for the new generation,” says Michael Asger Wulff, CCO at FuelTech. “Also the new engine generation is designed for higher fuel efficiency. For shipowners, this means more efficient fuel use while reducing NOx emissions and meeting the requirements for operation in designated NOx Emission Control Areas.”

Building on existing LNG experience

For shipowners already invested in LNG, the move to a new generation of propulsion technology is also about how to carry existing infrastructure, knowledge and operational experience forward.

GVT Mk V builds on the technology and experience already established across LNG-fuelled fleets while adapting to new technical and operational requirements. This enables owners to continue developing their LNG operations without starting over, while retaining flexibility as fuel availability, economics and regulatory requirements evolve.

In this way, GVT Mk V extends the value of existing LNG investments while supporting more efficient operations today and the industry’s longer-term transition towards lower-emission shipping.

The Gas Valve Train Mk V is now available for order, with first commercial deliveries expected from Q3 2027
