Framo builds ‘factory of the future’ to meet strong demand for pumping tech across ocean industries

Bergen, Norway: World-leading pumping systems specialist Framo is taking another strategic step into the future with the expansion of its factory at Holsnøy in Vestland Country. In the first phase, two new halls each of 10,000 sqm will provide a total of 20,000 sqm of state-of-the-art production space. This marks a significant investment in capacity, technology development and local value creation.

“Holsnøy will become a strategic focus area for Framo. All our aquaculture production, as well as future expansion within offshore, will be located there,” said Martijn Bergink, Managing Director of Framo and President of Alfa Laval’s Marine Division.

The Holsnøy facility was made entirely emission-free in 2023 by phasing out all use of fossil fuels. The expansion is being undertaken to meet future demand with significantly increased capacity. The initiative will also create new jobs, enable greater automation and digitalization, while further strengthening sustainable production processes.

“Given the recent growth in our Pumping Systems business unit in Bergen on the west coast of Norway, the current production facilities do not support the business plan. A major investment program covering site consolidation and capacity investments has been launched, with specific investment decisions to be taken stepwise. But in total, the program is estimated to cost approximately SEK 4 billion between 2025 and 2032,” added Tom Erixson, CEO and President of Alfa Laval.

The new Holsnøy site has already been zoned and approved for further development. With the first-phase investment plan now in place, the company will soon be ready to break ground. The expansion will take place in stages as part of a long-term development of the site.

“We are combining climate-friendly technology with modern production solutions. This is not only about growth for Framo, but about building the industry of tomorrow,” concluded Richard Sulen, Managing Director at Framo Flatøy.
